Bow when Greeting

Instead of shaking hands, the Japanese bow.
We also bow to express gratitude, apologies, and
requests. When you greet, you bow and say
something like "ohayougozaimas" (Good morning)
and the other party bows and say the same thing.
You may happen to see the Japanese bow to each
other many times when greeting. Do you know why?
